Enjoy your morning
Whatever makes you happy it's always good to make time to relax, calm those nerves and enjoy your getting ready time.
Can you tie a double windsor?
Over my past 18 years photographing weddings there have been a fair few occasions where the guys have had to huddle round a youtube video, on the morning of the wedding, to learn how tie their ties.
There is absolutely no shame in not knowing. Everyday of secondary school, I, like a lot of people, would loosen my tie, leave it knotted so I could just slip it back on again the next day.
However my advice before the big day is to have a practice as its not a job you want to be panicking about at the last minute.
Same goes for the buttonhole
This one is understandable as it's not everyday you are required to pin something to your suit lapel. My assistant and I will always be happy to help with this but I have created a handy video in case you wish to give it a try.
The speeches
As someone who has had the pleasure of delivering a Groom's speech and a Best Man's speech I have to say the latter was far scarier. Just remember, as the Groom you know pretty much, if not everyone in that room, and all those people are here to celebrate you and your partners special day. They are wishing you well and rooting for you. My main bullet points of advice would be the following:
- Keep it original. There is nothing that sounds better than if its written from the heart. Even if you don't think you have it in you, trust yourself.
- Make drafts. Speaking as someone who left it until the last minute, write it in advance so you can tweak it if you need AND DON'T JUST WING IT! Even if its just bullet points to remember you should have something.
- Thank the right people. On my last point about not leaving it until the last minute, guess who forgot to thank his mother in law for making the wedding cake? Thats right, this fool. Your job as groom is to lead the thank yous so if in doubt, consult your fiancee.
- Encouragement. Traditions are changing for the better and often times the speeches are not just confined to the traditional three (Father of the Bride, Groom and Best Man). If your partner or close family member wishes to speak also then encourage that. It's a beautiful thing.
- Print it out. Yes we all have phones in our pockets with notes pages but the photos will not look great with you holding your iPhone. The archaic ways are the best sometimes, so print a couple of copies out.
